We are relocating from Charlotte - Lake Norman area and would like a similar area in Greenville. Are there any populated lake areas near Greenville? Populated being shopping, restaurants, golf, subdivisions, etc. We will be in the area next week for house hunting and not sure which lake/area we should focus on.
The Lake Robinson and Lake Cunningham areas might be a good fit, though I don't think any of the lake areas around Greenville would have as much really close shopping and restaurants as the Lake Norman area. Saluda Lake is probably the closest, but it's on the west side of Greenville, which isn't the nicest side.

Thanks!
If getting a job is not an issue for you, you should consider Anderson which is on lake Hartwell and housing costs are much more affordable. You can get much nicer house in Anderson for same money in Greenville. Anderson is a small town but it has decent mall and shopping and lot of restaurants due to its proximity to Clemson University about 10 miles away. Anderson is only 25 miles from Greenville so you can always go over there on weekends for more shopping or big night on the town. Anderson would be your best bet in the upstated for populated area near lakes. There are two more pristine lakes near Hartwell, Lake Jocasee and Lake Keowee, which are often refer to the Lake Tahoes of the south due to their clear water.
These 3 lakes have a better vibe than the smaller ones closer to Greenville and Spartanburg. Lake Hartwell and Lake Keowee both have large marinas and Hartwell has some restaurants right on the lake. Lake Jocasse has a nice state park next to it and up in near the mountains.
Lake Greenwood is ok too but Greenwood is a little more isolated overall, well off the intertate. The lake is actually separated from Greenwood by 15-20 minutes, maybe more so the area right around the lake is pretty rural.
You could also check out Lake Murray in Columbia, and live out in Lexington area. That is probably most populated lake area in SC, with ANderson 2nd, Greenwood 3rd, Seneca/Clemson 4th.
Hartwell is nice enough and probably best fishing lake of the 3. Also much closer to the interstate and restaurants and a city in Anderson. Keowee only really better if you got $$$$$$$$$ and want to live in isolated area which doesn't sound like this guy's thing if he's talking Lake Norman comparisons. You close enough in ANderson to visit the other two lakes so it is really all the same area.
I dont knwo what you mean by closer but I doubt it is much closer to Greenville than Lake Hartwell and Hartwell straight shot down interstate while the trip b/c Keowee and Greenville is going to be more zig zag on 2 lane roads.
Lake keowee. Gorgeous. Closer and nicer than Hartwell.
Agree with this is general, but then Keowee is also much smaller and more removed from restaurants / shopping. We chose Hartwell years ago due to the easy access and large size (almost 1,000 miles of shoreline).
