Hi,
I am a single mom looking to relocate from the northeast with my daughter to the Greenville or Anderson County areas and I'm finding my search for an apt. a bit frustrating. My preferences are safety, good school, being close enough to drive to some activities and amenities like shops/restaurants but I don't need to be on top of them and I don't have a huge income so I'm looking for a 1 or preferably 2 bedroom in the $500- $620 range. There are tons of places and I have found several that fit into my price range but in checking apartment ratings I am finding so many with complaints about various things (noise, safety, maintenance problems, mgmt. etc..) especially roach infestations which is one thing I cannot live with, ewwww!
I'm hoping there are those out there who have suggestions on what complexes are clean, safe and bug free- if you can't post names feel free to message me but I am getting so frustrated trying to narrow this down and I don't have too much time in which to make my decision. I am looking in Greenville, Taylors, etc.. Anderson, Seneca, and I recently found some in Central, SC (although that may be more of a college area?).
You might have to add $200 to get a nice apartment. I live in Stoneledge Plantation on Roper Mtn Rd 2 bedroom $785, really safe area, Pelham Road Elementary/Beck Academy schools I'm sure the 1 bedrooms are around $600 range. Huntington Downs Apts and Roper Mountain Woods are also nice apartments in this price range.
You have to remember that many people that actually take the time to write reviews on those websites have had a bad experience with the complex and want everyone in the world to know their problem. I'm going to PM you a place that I lived at while I lived in the Greenville area that I think will suit your needs.
Very True PAinSC, my apartment has a ton of bad reviews, but they are all from people who didn't clean up after themselves or didn't pay attention to the announcements and flyers management put up. I really love it here. But it might also be that I love Greenville. I have lived many places and Greenville is the best so far. Great downtown, great family activities, always something to do.
I live in Stoneledge Plantation too. One bedroom will run you a little over $600. Good location, safe. Management has been a problem for us though. They told us we were okay on our renewal after turning in the sheet and then when we went up on our scheduled time to sign the new lease, they tried to make us pay more and said we didn't turn the sheet in (which we did about two months before we had to renew). The blamed it on new management and said that it was lost in the shuffle. Eventually did give us the lower rate though every time we renew it is much higher.
Have had issues with our dishwasher, dryer vents (they tried to tell us we didn't know how to dry clothes), our bedroom window, door lock, etc. It's nice enough and good location but that's the only reason we stay. They are currently butchering trees all over the complex. You can tell they don't know how to properly prune trees and went with the cheapest service. There are drainage issues around a lot of the apartments aka no ditches or runoffs around a lot of them.
The bright side has been the current maintenance staff which has been very helpful and friendly. Currently looking for a house though and do not want to renew in February if we can help it. They are gouging the people who have been here the longest.
Good luck on your search. Greenville is awesome, you'll love it.

I would love to be able to add that much to my budget but I don't have it, as it is I will have to be looking for income once I get there so I have to be very careful what kind of budget situation I get myself into but I'll check into the 1 bedrooms you mentioned. I don't mind having to use a futon or pull out so long as my baby girl gets her own bedroom.

If you don't mind my asking what place do you live at if you don't want to post it you could message it to me?
I was originally looking at places in Spartanburg as well which seem to be less expensive over all but my friends who live off of Pelham Rd. in Greenville advised me to stay away from Spartanburg altogether. They said it was very dangerous, I did see that it is on Forbes top 10 most dangerous cities. Right now I live in NJ w/family in a small town that has virtually no crime (both hard to find here) but I can't keep us living here (rough situation) and I can't afford to live on my own in the Northeast it is just waaaaay too expensive. Cheap places in questionable areas are over $1000 per month for 1 bedroom.
I've spent most of the last 15+ years living in the south anyway (TN and Georgia) and tend to like it better. My daughter was born in FL but I don't really count that as the south even though some do. So anyway I am striking out on my own after divorce and it is very intimidating but I really need to find a stable home for my daughter and I in a place that has good potential for work and living.

They live in Stoneledge Plantation (see post# 3 above).
Not all of Spartanburg is bad, just like all of Greenville isn't bad. Each has some areas that are bad but that's in almost every city in America. The best place is where you have found work before you move. If you have not begun looking for work here already I suggest you go to the career sites and check it out soon!
