are there any communities where lots are for sale in an area already established or being built (without having to go through the builder)? basically wanting to buy a lot in a nice area in Greer/Taylors/Furman area that I can hold on to and not have to build right away AND that I can build myself later on. Possible?

I can take a look; I know that a friend's mother was looking for the same thing and just found one.

Steve- I'll buy one if i can find a good deal and one in a desirable area. but so far, the schools are not great where i'm finding lots, and i will avoid those areas. i love greenville but schools are not too impressive from what i'm seeing. i keep seeing 5 and 6 (out of 10) school scores. where i'm at, its all 10's. so i have to be picky.

this will be a buy and hold (the lot).

thx to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

Well South Carolina isn't exactly known for the amount of stellar schools. As I'm sure you've been told before, if you're looking for good schools you will have to head more towards the Blue Ridge school district.

please do not rely on Greatschools scores solely - I live within 7/8 scores - my kids go to public schools - I'm very pleased with GCS - AND, real estate prices in my current area (Gower/Parkins Mill) is on fire - ANY areas near downtown Greenville will have the most return in the Upstate IMO regardless of what schools one is zoned for

Default Parkins mill - assigned middle school and high school

drfranklin,
We are looking into the parkins mill area and saw your post regarding school aged children. I will have a middle schooler and high schooler when we move.
You seem happy with the schools there and that gives me some peace of mind. I don't expect my kids to go to Ivy league schools but certainly want them to get a good education.
I'd greatly appreciate it if you could comment on the middle and high school. Thanks so much.
