I am showing my age here, but when did home economics and shop class disappear from middle school electives in Greenville County Schools? My daughter is going to 6th grade next year and her choices are art, chorus, band, strings, and two foreign languages.

It's funny that you brought this up. I was talking about these classes and how important they are in life. We were required to take both and I think it was so helpful. Kids these days don't know how to sew a button on a piece of clothing or cook. I even learned about sanding and staining in wood shop. Schools don't focus on life skills anymore and it's a shame because it's so important.

I agree so much. I think I will try to teach my kids some of those same things, but I feel sorry for other kids who may miss out.
I think LDHS still offers it. I know they have auto mechanics, and a combined "horticulture" class. Use to have a machine shop class, but the teacher left and they opted not to replace him, but to shut down the class.
I can understand eliminating home economics classes. Anything with living at home can be taught by parents at home.
Shop classes could be eliminated from high schools and transferred to Greenville County Schools' career centers.
I may be wrong, but some already are like that. I know my coworkers son had to go to a different place for his welding class at Hillcrest a couple of years ago. (Cant recall where t was he had to go.) He also went to the same building for something, but I dont recall what it was he went over there for.
The career centers appear to have many good programs.
