Epic would be Greenville Health System's electronic patient record database. I could easily see improved efficiency with maintaining records may require less staff and time to maintain them.
I wonder if the cuts include providers in specialty and general practices.

Anyone who has ever been to a hospital and seen the bill ( $56K for a simple 45 minute outpatient surgery is what a coworker got) knows that this is not sustainable. Add in the costs of constant renovation that goes on in GHS where a corridor is renovated only to be torn down less than a month later and started all over again. The number of administrators have exploded, and they are are the last to be laid off.
And then you have the nurses overburdened by a large number of patients where they have to constantly chart things in the computer and spend more time looking at the computer screens rather than the patient, let alone spend time talking to them.
After some time no amount of slick advertising boasting about the "latest and greatest discoveries occurring right here in the upstate" can take away the fact that patient care is impersonal and declining.
And with falling reimbursement from Medicare and medicaid (CMS) and being unable to make up the shortfall overcharging the private insurance, the expected shortfall has occurred and will continue to occur. Thus the scramble to cut jobs.
Mine is also in IS and is hoping to weather the layoffs until she can retire this year. As I understand, most of the cuts are coming from IS/IT.
What is the likelihood of the layoffs being executed through early retirement, if it is being offered?
