Now, this girl is clearly pretty advanced, but it just goes to show the effectiveness of it. I don't care how big, strong, and tough you are - when you can't breathe, and when your arms are being twisted in directions that they weren't meant to go, then.... ouch.
Be aware that you can't learn any martial art in a seminar (1 day, 6 week, whatever) just like can't learn to shoot a gun at a single CWP class. Bottom line is that anything you want to be able to do to defend yourself, you need to practice. Whether that's regular shooting at a range or joining a martial arts school, you can expect to perform in a real scenario the same as you practice. If you don't practice ever, don't expect to be effective at whatever you are trying to do.
Jiujitsu is very effective, as are most martial arts (depending on circumstance, body types, training, etc). But you won't be putting somebody in an effective choke in a live scenario after a class or two, just like you won't be effectively kicking somebody after a couple classes of taekwondo, or throwing them after a couple classes of Hapkido.
I own a martial art school in Greenville, and I have taught women's self defense classes before. Aside from the portion of class discussing awareness, observation skills, and other similar concepts, I didn't feel like the rest of the class (the physical techniques, such as striking and grappling) would be retained beyond a few weeks/months, and certainly not years.
If you are interested in martial arts, by all means. If you are interested in owning and shooting a gun with the goal of concealed carry, great. But please don't assume that you are now superman/woman because you took a seminar.
