That spot, which my children call a jail cell but which is more rightly known as the grotto or spring house, is the site of a natural spring that once served a botanical purpose.
Tucked in the southwest corner of the park, behind the amphitheater, the spring house has a story intricately interwoven with the history of the Furman Arboretum that once stood in the area and drew visitors throughout the 1930s.
