There are several transportation improvement projects planned in Spartanburg County.

Interstate 85 exit 63 [East Main Street (South Carolina Highway 290)]: Convert to a diverging diamond interchange. Construction is projected to start in 2019.

Interstate 85:
  • Widening from six to eight lanes between Pelham Road (exit 54), Greenville County, and South Carolina Highway 101 (exit 60). Construction is set to start in 2021 or 2022.
  • Reconstruction of northbound and southbound lanes from mile markers 69 to 77 in Spartanburg County, underway. The 12-inch concrete surface will be replaced with a new 13-inch concrete surface. Completion is expected by July 2019.
  • Rehabilitation of ramps and a new asphalt surface from mile markers 56 to 68. Completion is expected by December of this year.

Interstate 85 Business: Bridge replacements over the Norfolk Southern railroad and Howard Street between Hearon Circle and New Cut Road. Construction is expected to start in the fall of 2019.

Crescent Aveune: Bridge replacement over Fairforest Creek near South Forest Street and Irwin Avenue Extension. Construction is expected to start this fall.

Asheville Highway (United States Route 176): Operational improvements from Interstate 585/South Carolina Highway 56 split to Interstate 26 with intersection upgrades at John Dodd Road, Belcher Road and Springfield Road. The contract has been awarded for work to start this month.

Hopefully Greenville county can wake up and get some interchanges redesigned as well. Some that badly need to be redesigned to diverging diamond or SPUI:

-Pelham Rd. & I85
-Laurens Rd. & I85
-Roper Mountain & I385
-Woodruff Rd. & I85

Greenville County has transportation issues of its own. (I will save that for another discussion.)

I will need to read up on other road improvement and transportation projects and studies in Spartanburg County. I know Old Furnace Road and Reidville Road (from South Carolina 290 to the Greenville County line) are in need of improvements.

Laurens Rd/I85 interchange is extremely dangerous - fortunately, it will be completely redesigned - but, not until 2024

Staying on topic in Spartanburg County...

I would like to check the long range plans to widen Old Furnace Road from Asheville Highway to Parris Bridge Road from two lanes to five lanes including a center turn lane. The corridor has many vehicles on it daily.

Notable projects I have discovered at Spartanburg Area Transportation Study:

New Cut Road at John Dodd Road: Convert from all-way stop to two roundabouts.

Cannon's Campground Road at Gossett Road: Realign intersection with Cannon's Campground Road to Interstate 85 via Gossett Road as the major corridor. Cannon's Campground Road would T at the realigned intersection. (This sets up the future widening of Skyland Drive, Cannon's Campground Road, and Gossett Road from Drayton Road to Interstate 85 from two lanes to five lanes with a center turn lane.)

In my mind, the most urgent needed improvement in Spartanburg County is widening I-85 from 4 to 6 lanes from the railroad underpass just West of the Pacolet River towards Gaffney. The volume of traffic, especially truck traffic, makes the current 4 lanes inadequate and dangerous.

Greenville Highway (United States Route 29) eastbound in Lyman is temporarily closed as the approach to the bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad is repaired.

Both bridges should be replaced in the future.
