In what areas around Greenville (neighborhoods, towns, etc) can one find a cute little (~1200-1500 sq ft) house (~200K or less) in a nice area, with some shopping nearby and better shopping not too much further, low crime, access to walking trails and parks, community center, and perhaps community events such as farmer's market and festivals? (A quaint, walkable downtown would be a nice bonus!)

Can probably go further away from Greenville as long as there is good shopping and medical facilities somewhere within 30 miles or so. Is there such a thing or has the housing market there now increased out of my price range? Retired...no kids. Thanks!

There are still homes in your price range everywhere in this area, but the market is very competitive. The ones in good condition will sell quickly, with multiple offers. Greer, Taylors, Fountain Inn come to mind. There are a few in Simpsonville still as well. Access to walking trails could be a little difficult as there is mainly the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Some neighborhoods do have their own trails. If you do go out to the outskirts of Taylor or Greer, or Travelers Rest, you will be very close to several state parks, preserves, and waterfalls. You might check out Pickens County as well.

Spartanburg still does. Converse Heights in Spartanburg has homes like that and it is close to downtown. Duncan Park is the next closest neighborhood near downtown with homes in that price range. Fernwood is about three miles from downtown and has homes in that price range. My mother just sold her 2600 sq. ft. home in Fernwood for under 200K. All of these neighborhoods have parks, walking trails, shopping, medical, restaurants, etc.

Also, check out the north side of Greer. Off Route 29 and Route 14 (Main Street). Son has a 3bed, 2 bath, 2 car garage on a nice flat lot. Not the fanciest but not far from every amenity and Greer is booming. Easy access to Greenville and Spartanburg.

Best of luck.

I just saw this home on Zillow, 417 Overbrook Rd, for sale in your price range. Overbrook, is a cute neighborhood and close to downtown Greenville.

Thanks for the suggestions! We'll be taking a short trip to Greenville soon and just looking for a few areas to check out on our first trip.

What a perfect little house! If only we were closer to moving. Hopefully, I'll be able to find something similar when the time comes.

You could also check out Berea and San Souci. Some cute homes there and you will be close to the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Simpsonville is a nice, if unremarkable, town. My brother did ok for himself there, although that was a few years ago.

Yes, I was just going to mention Cherrydale. As long as schools aren't of importance, it's a good place to look. It's is close to the SRT and downtown.
