Hi! My family has been hiking in Greenville many times and we have never once had a tick. This seems so hard to believe considering that ticks are terrible along the east coast. Curious what you locals have to say about ticks. Is Greenville, and the surrounding mountains, in some kind of sweet spot? Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.
I grew up in northwestern New Jersey where ticks are unavoidable and everywhere. I have been in upstate SC for 18 years now, doing a pretty good amount of outdoor activity, and I have never once seen a tick on me or anyone I was with.
I think it has to do with deer and hunters. Northwestern New Jersey is flooded with deer. I would drive home from work in high school each night and more nights than not I'd see deer - often an entire herd crossing the road.
In South Carolina I could count on my fingers the number of times I've seen deer while driving. There are deer hunters in NJ, but far more in SC.

I agree. We’ve only been here a year but have been hiking, skeet shooting and doing a lot of yard work without a single tick. Now, snakes . . .
In Virginia (outside DC), there were always dead deer carcass on the highways and back roads alike, hit by cars. We travel Route 29 between Spartanburg and Greer quite often and I’ve never seen a dead deer. We were talking about this about a month ago.
i've been an avid hiker in the area for the past 20 years. i've never gotten a tick {knock on wood} and my wife has only gotten one and it was probably 10 years ago
I few years ago I went hiking Sumter national forest near Newberry SC and the trail was in mostly pine forested area. This was just a day hike and when I got home I found close to 100 tick after checking myself my dog. The next week or so was hell, we had ticks in the bed, you would go to bed and wake up with 5-6 ticks on you. They were in the couch and on the floor. They were in my car, I had to park my car in full summer sun for a few days to kill them all. Then about 2 weeks later from first coming home with them we had round two of baby ticks. We ended up having to getting the whole house bombed to fully kill them.
Ticks in this area are no joke, there are parts of the year that are worse then others.
