The government should allow gas stations to freely change prices for gas. Suspend anti-gouging laws. This would end panic buying and shortages really quick.
It's kind of crazy that there's a gas shortage and it's still being sold under $3/gallon
I could see anti-gouging laws during a hurricane state of emergency but I don't see why we'd need them during a pandemic state of emergency.
If gas retailers inflate the price drastically in a day when anti-gouging laws are activated, they face the consequences. The worst the State of South Carolina could do is revoke a retailer's license to sell fuel.
There are two gas lines that move through South Carolina, Colonial and Plantation. Retailers who depend on Colonial will continue to experience shortages for days. Retailers who depend on Plantation should see increased business.
The critical thing to remember is that there really isn't a shortage of gasoline.
The pipeline being knocked offline is a significant, but transient, distribution issue. As the pipeline reopens, the distribution issues will likely be gone within two weeks. The price hikes? That's another story.

The tanks are still full in Belton. The problem is the hoarders. No pipeline directly to a gas station. It all lies with selfish people hoarding. If we went on as normal you would see no difference.
We drove to FL yesterday (first road trip in 15 months!) and had no trouble finding gas at normal prices. We would have canceled the trip, but would have lost over $500 in reservations. On the plus side, traffic was very light the whole way.
I haven't been to a gas station in 14 months. If I wear a mask inside a gas station store in the Greenville area, will I be harassed by any MAGA morons?

Exactly. Totally a crisis of our own making. All people had to do was get gas as usual - never would have happened. Thing was shut down over two weeks 4 to 5 years ago and it didn't become a massive problem. People have short memories.
