Personally I think it's a bad look but does the government really need to get involved? The safety thing is a joke. There are plenty of vehicles in much worse shape on the road.
Shoot, I'd argue that the Prius doing 49 in the left lane on 85 is more of a danger.
This is a Carolina specific thing? This is a right of passage in Texas and Florida.
Rather than banning large tire trucks, I feel like actually having some kind of vehicle inspection would do greater good, and maybe everyones normal sized tires wouldnt keep flying off on the highway.

Started in CA (of course). People were copying the Baja trucks that have the rear lower so the back tires hit first when landing from a jump. From there it went downhill.
Not sure how many tires I've seen on the die of Texas highways especially given the number of lifted trucks on the road.
Again, that 1993 Pontiac Grand Am is going to be more of an issue than your typical truck where the owner has invested $5000 in wheels and $5000 in suspension mods.
Maybe some Carolina folks can chime in with local inspection requirements. I know VA is pretty strict, failed my son's car for a worn bushing.

Well, this certainly seems overkill.. "The penalty is “mandatory revocation of license” for at least a year."

Is there some serious loss of control or visibility you get from this mod? If not this really smacks of "kids these days need to pull up their pants!!!"

Depending on the angle, yeah probably. If you imagine (without a front camera) the average person in a pick up has zero visibility from the hood line until, shoot...8' in front of them. Then I'd imagine the squat could double that. But that would be similar for any large or lifted truck or any SUV with a smaller person driving or anytime someone is leaned back in the driver's seat.

On the 3rd offense is what I read.

Never driven like this but seems to me head tilted to the sky is never good for driving visibility then again looking at a cell phone or texting isn't either. If I'm the insurer I wouldn't want to cover this mod.
