Would welcome input on on towns in mid to upper SC (central or more westerly) with small affordable under $250K. Lower crime places with basic amenities and decent medical care is a must. Thank you. P.S. Also were NOT to live around these areas?

How familiar are you with SC? Sounds like you are not very familiar, not critical, just trying to understand, looking for a place to retire? We live in Easley in Pickens county which could be a fit. Unless you want to live in Columbia, not a whole lot between here and there. The north west counties might make the most sense.

The Upstate sounds like what you describe. Anderson, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens, and Spartanburg. Much of these counties are rural with lots of activities to entertain you.

We live in Greer, a rather large area right next to Greenville.
We are rural and quiet just a few miles from the NC border yet only 20 minutes to downtown, just a few more into Greenville.
Prisma Health has a very good system here, lots of available doctors and a nice hospital.
And if you need it our son has flown in/out of the Greenville airport (GSP) several times and says it's really nice too.
We are inland from Myrtle Beach far enough that hurricanes do not affect us very much.
We get lots of rain and the area stays pretty green.
That price of $250k may be a problem however as real estate around here is going up. Last Nov we paid $318k for a 14 year old 2000 sq. ft. 3/2 pm .7 acres in a more or less private area.
Good luck with your search.

Housing costs have risen considerably in the last 2-3 years. Enough so that many are unable to become first time homeowners. 20 years ago we bought our house for $120k, which was less than it was when it was brand new. Today, Zillow says its worth $274k. If I sold 5 years ago I would have only gained about $50k. There are many new subdivisions being built around the Upstate, and as those come online, prices will settle down some.

Sorry for the delay to all responders. I only took a drive through a few area of northern SC. I work in home health so it can be hard obtaining ample work in and around tiny cities and smaller towns. Just from the look, and feel. Pickens seemed fair. Didn't make as far over as Seneca. Got go up there again before the full summer heat. Then again, the heat won't matter. Yep. Home prices remain crazy.

I will add that while I like variations in weather, floods are something no one welcomes. Will have to research where the risky areas are.

True. I'm not nearly familiar enough at this point with SC.

Flooding problems here are very localized due to the hills. Don't buy at the bottom of a hill. Most counties have a GIS (Geographic Information System) website which can be used to check things like flood zones.

Seneca is nice pretty far from Gville much closer to Anderson, we are on the outskirts of pickens and LOVE it, its nice and quiet close enough to Easley and if Easley doesn't have it Gville is not that far
