We're a little confused! I had a realtor tell me today that public sewege is only available on homes within the city here (& all of the south basically). Is this true?!?!? With all the subdivisions (old & new) around, they all have septic tanks? Up north (Cincinnati area burbs included), most places have public sewege & water, and utility cables are all underground (especially on new builds). We're just really leery of septic tanks, comes from not having one in the last 17 - 20 years for both of us, & not having good experiences with them when we did have them! With the soil being so different here in the south, does that make having a septic tank better? Would love all your local inputs on this, maybe you can ease our fears a little. Right now it is really limiting where we can find our new home to build or buy from! Help!

It varies from place to place. The closer you are to the cities, the more likely you are to have sewer. But then most of the old mill towns also have sewer.

The Upstate is in the piedmont region of the state, so there are lots of hills to drain away septic tanks. The red clay also helps. Its why most of the new subdivisions have so many large lots. I wouldn't worry about having a septic tank instead of sewer.
