I don't know about IT work, but in my line of work (toolmaker) you get no response from out-of-state employers. I am a manager, and we routinely ignore resumes from out of state- we need someone right now, not someone who is planning to move. Your mileage may differ...
I tend to side w/ Tony on this one- our first big move (to FL) was literally sight unseen, and our move to Greenville in a couple years will be similar, although we will have visited many times, We won't even look for jobs until we move. BUT- We didn't have children on our first move, and our son will be an adult by the time we move again- makes a big difference. My boss recently moved to CO with children and no job. They are having a $350K house built! They have enough money put away to cover then for quite a while, though, and they both work, so they should be all right. That's part of Tony's message- you have to get yourself in a financial position where it's not so much of a giant leap of faith. Good luck!

Yes, he has posted on those websites you mentioned. That is what I kind of suspected: they don't respond that often to out of staters. I am willing to live off savings from the sale of our home if we move and then find a job, but I am concerned about how long on average it would take to get a job in G'ville. I guess that is where faith comes in!
I feel like if we don't just take the leap we will end up hoping and hoping for an opportunity to come along and we will have wasted years waiting for something that may not happen.
Ughh... what to do??!
If there is anyone out there that might have a lead on an IT job in the area (Network administrator) please let me know!!
Thanks for listening to me blabber on!

One thing you can try is using Monster, Dice, ComputerJobs, etc to find positions. Then contact the HR directors at those locations and see if you can set up several interviews. Take a few days vacation and come visit and interview. You'll stand a much better chance if you can be there in person.

Greenville has a "One Stop-Center" for its County Workforce System that is very helpful to people just like you, charliegirl. It is a State-run website, so it should not be considered advertising. If so, the link will probably be removed, so you can simply look it up on Google.

After seeing this thread go along, it sounds to me like you truely feel that Greenville is the place for you.

Another part of the equation on the "leap of faith", is this....Are you willing to do what it takes to "make" it happen. I'm talking, living on beans and rice and delivering pizzas at night if necessary. Dumping the cell phones and cable tv (yes, I'm a big Dave Ramsey fan).

I've had to make those sorts of decisions to keep things afloat at times. That's part of why I'm comfortable making the leaps when necessary.

Remember this too, life has a way of grabbing hold of you and keeping you places. I didn't learn that until this last move. Fortunately, I got held in Greenville. If I were to do it over again, I would have given more thought to where I was moving, because I could have been stuck in some miserable places.

In regards to the market here. This is really general, but....if I were to loose my job I'm very confident that I could find something, in a matter of a month or two that would pay our bills. Might not be in my field, and might not be what I want, but the bills would get paid.

Best wishes on figuring it all out. It's not easy.
