My father passed away in early 2011 after a long and fulfilling life. My condolences on your loss.
As Personal Representative for the Estate of Mr. Blondebaerde, Sr. (and sole surviving heir), I dealt with a lot of that, too.
My solution was a bit flippant, but may have been "effective." I still get some of his mail to this day, though that's mostly stopped anymore.
First, settling the estate, I squared up with a few creditors. That was on-advice of my estate attorney. Not a big deal, though they were persistent not long after he passed. "Dead" is no excuse, seems-like. Once the estate was settled (a specific process, which varies state by state), I was only then obligated to respond.
Disconnecting his phone line with no forwarding number slowed a lot of them down further. Might not be an option for you, but it's really quite easy these days.
Filing notice with the US Post Office to a new address (mine) opposite side of the country foiled even more.
Selling the house, well: the new owners can deal with his mail, I guess. Dunno about that, if-applicable in your case.
The last, and somewhat-flippant (but inline with my Old Man's odd sense of humor, similar to mine): I sent away for a self-inking stamp kit in the mail:
"Return to Sender. Reason...(couple options. One is, "Deceased.")
I stamped everything that came to my mailbox c/o Mr. Blondebaerde, Sr., as "Return to sender: Deceased." End of story, bad pun intended.
