My wife and I were yearly NRA members but went with a $400 lifetime option. We pay $25 each every quarter. Yes, I know it costs more but it was easier on the checkbook than $600 all at once.
My wife has kept the receipt from where she originally signed up at the NRA offices.
Others have mentioned Ducks Unlimited. I'm not a big hunter and didn't know much about them until a friend took me to their main office in Memphis. As far as wetlands preservation, those guys are some of the best. It was a great tour.
I upgraded to life last year. I dont recall exactly what it cost but it was a promo & around $500 I think. As LifelongMogal said the NRA along with many other groups are essential if we want to keep our rights intact.
I'm one of the guys who think the NRA often compromises too much. But I recognize that its primary function IS NOT as a lobby tool or group. The NRA was started to promote civilian marksmanship by providing training & administering matches on the local & national levels. They are in the uncomfortable position of trying to maintain their status as the accepted training source for many states pistol permits, LEO training & match administration while at the same time dealing with a membership who demands they take a pro gun stance & lobby for pro gun legislators ect. But if they alienate those politicians by being uncompromising they risk loseing their ability to perform their primary functions of training, administration & promoting all shooting sports..
It'd be an easy think for states to just decide that the NRA courses werent for them anymore & decide to draw up their own courses as well as stop NRA sanctioned events etc.
So, I support the NRA for what it excells at best and I support other national & local groups for retention of my second amendment rights.
We should IMO all be NRA members, but if your only reason for joining is pro gun lobbying your money might be better spent alsewhere.
