I am thinking about adding a 22LR carbine to my collection. It would be a lot cheaper for plinking than my 9MM carbine. I don't want the AR style. I also want it have rails for a sight/scope. I think Ruger is the most recommended, but I want to check my options.

Any suggestions is appreciated.

I'll recommend it again. The Ruger 10/22 is an awesome little rifle, plenty of rails.

Yup. Been making them "forever". Wouldn't be surprised if it were the best selling rimfire rifle in history. Lots of after-market modifications available.

Sorry - gonna be a contrarian; I really like the Marlin 39M.
Paired up with a Bushnell 633941 3-9x Scope (has BDC for 22LR built into the elevation turret), here's what it looks like and what I was able to get out of it at 25 yards:

Go ruger. Get the takedown you won't regret it. The marlin's a close second. Tough choice. Why not both ? The're cheap enough. IMHO you can't have too many .22's the're great plinkers / small game / varmint guns.

10/22 is hard to beat. It's the .22 Barbie accessory queen like the AR platforms.

I went with a Thompson Center Tcr 22, comes std with FO sites and a Magpul stock and has rail options as well. Uses many 10/22 accessories, for me it seemed in the middle between a base Ruger and one that was well equipped, and shoots real nice. And with the same lifetime warranty as other SW firearms.

Just something to consider anyway.

Well you asked about carbines, not rifles, and I am reading between the lines you want an autoloader. If I'm right about that, yeah, the 10-22 is very hard to beat. If you are open to a rifle as well, there are probably hundreds of choices out there, the Marlin lever action is very good, I like the old Remington 572 pump action, CZ has some attractive options. The Henry lever action is similar to the Marlin, and you may be able to get a better price on it. Ruger also makes or at least made a bolt action built similarly to the 10-22. The Savage has the "Accu-Trigger" and they seem to generally be quite accurate right out of the box.

But if you want something to customize, the basic 10-22 platform is like the Small Block Chevy V-8 - more options than you can shake a stick at.

Go with a Ruger 10/22 Take-Down Carbine with a 16” barrel... it’s fun and beats everything out there.

Just buy Ruger factory 10rd, 15rd or 30rd magazines and basically stay away from the the After Market magazines.... If you’re still on the fence, I’d buy 3-4 30rd magazines now since they’re going up in price, especially if the law should change.

If you decide not to go with the Ruger 10/22, you can sell them pretty quickly.

Also, start the process of stocking up on .22 L/R now as well.
