Probate, opening the box, and transferring ownership may amount to more than the guns are worth. I'd take the mess to the local PD and junk them.
are you even aware how many historically significant firearms are destroyed this way? widows having the local non-police-department destroy ww1 and ww2 trophies? what a joke that program is... EVERYBODY knows someone who would like to own a gun, and the old lady could pay for her bingo for a month off what she could get for them...
Nice try guys, but I DON'T think so!!! I found out what they are....one's a Ruger 44/45, one's a Taurus 44 Mag and the other I don't know yet. I am going to a FFL liscened dealer. Don't worry, I know better than to just hand the guns to someone!! A friend of mine is interested in the .44 mag and we will do the transfer/sale through an FFL dealer.

What are you thinking ?
Ruger 22/45 is worth around $250-300 depending on model, the Taurus .44mag maybe $400ish... I think she had a .357 mag as well , there is more money..... yeah right , just throw it away !!
Personally I think alot of the hassle is BS especially if she is going to sell them. If I was going to get rid of them I'd probably go to PA, get somebody to open the box or open it myself & bring them to a gun store to see about getting them appraised.
We do not register guns in this country, at least not federally & I see no difference between this & if her dad left her a box of hammers & screwdrivers.
At any rate if its against the law to sell them because theyre not hers I'd think it should be against the law for the PD to accept them
i cant bring myself to understand the laws pertaining to interstate firearms sales, they make no sense... i could drive over a border from one state and buy a gun, then take it back, no problems, but shipping one is?
Only for long guns.... You can't do that for hand guns... That is fedral. FFL to FFL for hand guns in any purchase out of state.
Hey, for one thing I'm not widowed or old. They were my Dad's and brother's guns
You did have me worried.... before you do something rash, re-consider keeping these, after all it was you and yours who last handled these firearms. Something real they held.
My father and little brother are gone now, and I have their guns as well as my own. There is that last little tie to life I can touch anytime i want.
My step mother was going to give away Dads, and I ended that instantly. My mother was going to do that same at my brothers time and I ended that too, being the last male.
When my time comes my shooter wife will keep what she wants and the rest will go to my son. He is 30 has his own son and his own guns, but still, I touched these.
Of what neither of them wants, well then, they can be sold.
Tin Knocker, some how you have mis-read. She is in Cal, and the person she wants to have the guns lives in Pa..
Taking these UN-LOADED to a FFL and having them shipped to a Pa FFL might cost her 25 bucks at the FFL as fee the shipping will be what ever the weight is on UPS trucks, maybe 30 bucks I guess, and the PA FFL will want a fee of maybe 25 bucks too. Not a bad hassel.
These belong to her since they are family items. A probate court order might be needed, but I doubt it.
