As usual, I'm looking for a new hairstylist. It occurred to me that it would be so much easier if stylists had portfolios of before and after cut/color that they, personally, have done. I mean, it could be online, it could be a few pictures on their phones. Why don't they do this?

Most of the experienced hairstylists I know do have some kind of portfolio of their past work--online, on their walls, in an album in their shop, et cetera.
My hairstylist has a portfolio. She posts pix of before and after on an Instagram page and on Facebook, and the reason I went to her was because I stumbled across it.

So I guess I'd have to know the stylist's name and then search out his/her social media info?
The local hair salons here only have magazine photos, not images of their own work on the walls (I've asked).
I think it would be awesome if the salons' websites had links to their stylists work or examples. There is a really fancy salon here and they rank their stylists based on experience (with names that are basically meaningless: "gold level", "premier level", etc). It would have been much more helpful if they had actual pictures of the work the stylist does.

Just do a search in your area for instagram salon, instagram hair, instagram hairdresser, instagram hairstylist or facebook salon, facebook hair, facebook hairdresser, facebook hairstylist, any combination like that.
I just did one for my area and a ton of accounts of salons and individuals come up.

A lot of us DO! Mostly online these days, and some have photos only. I prefer both. That way I can show my work to a variety of clients; old school and new age.
I have 6 albums on my work facebook page. Men, kids, cuts, color, styles, and formal. I also keep albums on my phone, as well as having a photo album portfolio at my shop.
I would ask your stylist, or call the salon and ask, if they get upset, move on down the road; they shouldn't be grumpy about those kinds of questions. A good stylist is PROUD to show off their work! 😉
No different than tattoo artists, I found mine through word of mouth, and verified his style was what I wanted through his Facebook portfolio.
Good luck!
