I first started dying my hair in 2006, and I never had any hair dye allergy problems until 2014 . . . because just out of the blue one day, I started breaking out in hives and rashes whenever I used the same hair dye I had used for over 3 years. Even when I tried ammonia-free hair dye, I still broke out in hives and rashes. I tried various ammonia and ammonia-free hair dyes, but I still always broke out in hives and rashes from using them.

So I was wondering if anyone has had my problem but was able to find a hair dye where they did not breakout out in hives and rashes? If so, could you please tell me which brand you use and where you purchased it?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I can't help you with types of hair dyes available in the US. But I just wanted to say what I do before I dye my hair. I take some antihistamines as a 'just in case' precaution.

I still think you need to find some sort of allergy-free hair dye, more suited to you though. Maybe having it done at the hairdressers would help, as they would be more knowledgeable and would do a skin test for you beforehand?

The problem is that hair dye is quite the assortment of chemicals and until you know which chemical in it your are allergic to, you won't be able to reliably find one that doesn't cause an allergic response. Additionally, it is actually dangerous to continue the hit or miss method of finding a dye, because most allergies get worse overtime and you could potentially become anaphylactic, which is life threatening.

You should consult an allergist.

In the mean time you can try a henna if you havent bleached your hair in a while.

Because over time your body absorbs all those chemicals through your scalp and they are toxic. Yes, I colored my hair for decades and quit last year when I got a cancer on my scalp. Just isn't worth it.

Henna is the only non-toxic thing (if it is pure vegetable dye) but you can only get bright red with it. If you are allergic I would quit IMMEDIATELY!! There is nothing out there that doesn't contain very toxic chemicals.
