The women in my family think this is a look for the younger generation and these styles should end around 35-40. Graying hair, receding hairlines, and old age are turn offs, according to them.

Personally, I wouldn't do it, but the look is trendy IMHO.

It isn't about trends. It's about ease of haircare most of the time. Curly/highly textured hair is a bit more labor intensive and we often wear braids (cornrows are braids) to give ourselves a break and to give our hair a break from manipulation/styling. Dreadlocks are a very low-maintenance style as are tapered cuts and fades, which is why a lot of older people gravitate toward them.

I always said I'm getting locs when I'm 50 and going for a short tapered cut at 60. Life is too short to spend as much time on hair as I do now (in my 40s!)

I think people should wear what makes them happiest and fits their lifestyles, regardless of age. I don't think haircuts should be connected with ages. However, there is also serious judgment out there from others who do believe there are specific ages at which certain looks are no longer appropriate. So doing what you like with your hair may get negative feedback.

Why not wear braids? 40 is not old. Depends on the length.

Well, Snoop Dogg wears braids and I think he looks great at age 50. I even like the single long braid he wears in commercials, although I have to believe there are hair extensions involved with that look.

Absolutely, but only if they want to. I am always envious of any man over 40 that even has hair!!!

Since we are going with "should" and talking subjectively, I say it depends. I've seen the hairstyle work with some, but not with others regardless of age. But there comes a time when the style doesn't work for a particular person, at which point it should be stopped. It's like folks who are experiencing significant head balding but refuse to just chop it all off.

Whether any hairstyle (or mode of dress for that matter) "works" for someone is a matter of opinion...of the bystander, not only the person wearing it. Ultimately, if the wearer thinks it works for them that's all that matters. "Beauty is in the eye of..." you can finish the rest.

Why is 40 some magical number where you're not supposed to do certain things, anymore?

Do what you want.
who cares?
