I think I compromise now with my husband. I dyed it very dark brown which he really loved but he would like it black. No way for me, so I just leave it the very dark brown even though I sort of want to make a change and go a little ighter.
Having read all these great responses, think I'm going to change back to a light golden brown--the color my hair was before it turned 25% grey. Will be less expensive to maintain, too!

If I arranged my hair to please the spouse, it would be butt-length, straight and black. Since my hair was auburn and curly (now it's silver), that was never really an option.
There are plenty of things we do to please the other - this isn't one of them.
No, I do it to please myself. It brightens me up. I always have full highlights put in every 3-4 months, it just looks nice and bright.
