I didn't want to start a new topic...but my g/f finally wants to do with highlights...I figure if I slip the stylist a few 20s she might come out a blonde...lol
Seriously, how much do blonde highlights generally run? My girl has black hair...maybe light blonde or brown highlights...
I am thinking close to $200...then I want to cry. Crazy prices....lol

It depends on the salon and the stylist. I've seen them for as low as $15 and as high as $400. It usually runs me about $6 in supplies as I do my own (of this I don't recommend unless you know what you're doing).
Yea I don't want her to attempt this herself. I found some places that state $80+ online for highlighting the full hair. We'll see...if she even goes through with it.
I lightened my hair myself to a very light blonde--removed all red pigment and was left with yellow.
So when I decided to go a little darker *ash* which contains a BLUE pigment, I turned my hair green. I freaked and bought a darker ash, and made my hair even greener! I didn't know about pigments until I went to a salon and the stylists gathered around, took my pic and just shook their heads.
All color was chemically lifted from my hair and a flat brown pigment was added. AWFUL. I had to let it wear out slowly. My scalp was a bit raw from all this. And I spent alot of money trying to fix the damage so I could go to work.
Everyone who saw my green hair, laughed alot. Asked me if it was easy being green. (some cruel reference to Kermit the Frog)
hon i went thru the same thing..and im going to try to upload pics..its impossible to do that alone at home..even at the salon i looked like a freak in the beginning..but to go from black to blonde..is only work for a professional
I would think to go from a real dark color to a blonde shade would require stripping the color first. I've always done my own hair from the boxes in the store, and can use the cheapest stuff on the shelf, but my hair has always been blonde. Only once did I mess up by using an ash shade and got the olive green odd highlights.
It is the drastic changes that is better done by using a professional. I've thought about playing around with some of the new layered coloring, but I would have to get it done professionally and then couldn't touch it up myself properly with a cheap box of hair color. So, it is still on the back burner for now.
If you are worried about how it will turn out, use a test strand.
If you do this, make sure to take a clipping from the root to the tip (from the underside of your hair in back) in order to see how your hair will look over all. If you just use a little piece from the ends, you can get a false sense of reality since your hair can grab color differently on various places on your head.
