Unlike most of you, it seems, I'm not exactly looking to have the most beautiful hair ever. I'm the kind of girl who showers at night and sleeps with it wet [I'm aware that's not a good idea] because I don't want to bother with blowdrying. I don't experiment much with different shampoos and the only conditioner I use, I put on the ends to make it easier to brush. And I don't use any other hair products whatsoever. My hair's long but not insanely long, and layered. I pretty much like to wake up, brush it out, and go. Shine, volume, etc don't really matter that much to me. It's naturally thick and I've had compliments on my hair without ever really trying.
I'm basically just wondering if there are any ideas or things you do yourself just for basic, general hair care. That doesn't involve going out and buying products. Mine gets frizzy and oily, and I imagine it's had a bit more breakage than it should because of sleeping on it wet and brushing it while in the shower. I might try house product tricks too, like that baking soda hair cleanser, or if there are similar combinations.
I've done some searching around the internet but just looking for your tips. Thanks in advance.
While I'm not in the hairstyling profession, I know that we need to be careful about combing and especially brushing hair while it's wet because it's easier to damage. It's important to get your hair trimmed regularly and also deep condition it once a week with a conditioner forumated for your hair type. I'm all for low maintenance hair and would love to hear what other suggestions you get here. Sounds like you have been blessed with beautiful hair--I get zero compliments on mine unless I've worked hard on it!
I also shower, wash my hair at night and sleep with it wet. I've been doing it all my life without a problem. I never blowdry my hair, but I use a good quality shampoo and conditioner, and also after I towel dry it, I use a leave in conditioner. In the morning I'll flatiron it, and I'm good to go. If I don't want it straight, I'll use either the curling iron or hot rollers. I don't spend a lot of time on my hair, and I always get compliments on it.
Number, I would NEVER brush my hair while it's wet! Get yourself a detangling comb if you feel a need to comb through your hair when it's still wet.
I also don't sleep with a wet head but mostly because I don't like wet pillows. If I don't want to take the time to shower AND fuss with my hair in the morning but want to look good, I'll shower and wash my hair early evening the night before and let it air dry before I go to bed. In the morning, I'll just wet it, add product (like thickening spray or mousse) and then style it as if I had just come out of the shower. I have straight hair but need it to have some volume so section and blow dry with a big round brush.
If you hair is frizzy & oily you may want to try a gentler shampoo. Over stripping your natural oils makes the scalp try to give you more oil but your hair ends up dry. When you use the gentler shampoo you are going to have to massage the scalp with your finger-pads to help remove the oil while the scalp re-balances. Try baby shampoo out. If you want more lather to it, add a couple drops of tea tree oil to the bottle. I like the 1/8 - 1/4 tsp per ounce.
Use a silk pillowcase. The cheapest one I found online was on amazon. It can help with acne breakouts too because silk tends to hold bacteria less than other fabrics.
Before you shampoo try a white vinegar rinse. It really gets the dead skin and oil off the scalp and gives the hair nice shine. If you don't shampoo afterwards make sure you rinse really well. You may need conditioner after doing this.
