Sorry to bump an old thread but it's relevant. I'm born and raised in Brooklyn but my company just made me an offer I can't refuse. $180k a year to come manage the area ( healthcare firm). What do I need to know about raising a young family in the VA beach area. My kids are 5,3,1 year olds.

I would agree with that. Congrats on the offer!

Just prepare for culture shock.

Virginia Beach is a beautiful place to live.
However, traffic can be a hassle - especially if you have to use the tunnels / bridges to commute.
If the office is east of Norfolk, you're set for V.B.
. . .
Downside - anything remotely waterfront / waterview is pricey, despite having so much waterfront.

Could some one please give me an idea of a good place to relocate in Virginia with out going into total shock, i cannot deal with the country or anything to secluded . I'm looking to buy a house in the price range of 200k-300k. Also looking for a good elementary schools. Please any advice is appreciated.
If you can get over how underpopulated this place is in comparison the Bronx and how spread out things are here you'll be okay. I don't know what the suburbs to the Bronx would be but consider even those would be a lot denser and greater population density than this place is. Although it is slowly changing.

Plus you don't have the transportation options here you'll have in the Bronx. But you're going to get culture shock coming to Virginia, I don't care where at in Virginia you go it is going to be dramatically different. At least in comparison to NYC.

Arrow New York Transplant here in Va Beach

Very simply put, if you're relocating from New York City or surrounding boroughs you will experience initial culture shock for sure. I'm born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, relocated my family here 19 years ago - it was a transition but the best move ever.

I suggest taking a trip down, stay for a few days and venture beyond the Oceanfront area. There is alot to do and see. Depending on where you are in life certain areas/cities will be more appealing than others. But I assure you, there's something for everyone.

Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads is great for raising a family but you will always be homesick for New York City LOL.

Good luck!

Ms. Ali
