Looking at two homes right now and can't decide which one to go with: the smaller, less expensive fixer with a crawl space, or the larger, good condition slab? Have a contractor uncle who says to stay away from slab. Anyone with personal experience with slab foundations in this area?

I'm partial to crawl spaces myself. I like the way a house looks on a crawl too vs a slab. Some homes look a little 'squat' on a slab. Plus it gets cold in the winter and a slab has cold floors. I lived in a slab foundation for years and wore bedroom shoes/socks all the time during the winter. And finally, if there is a plumbing issue you may have to jack hammer thru the concrete to get to the problem.
