I just moved here and my brakes are crapped out; I need a reference for a good, reliable HONEST mechanic ( yes there is just such a thing, hopefully here in Hampton Roads too ! ) I just havent been able to find one. Someone who charges a fair price and wont try to gyp me and doesnt drool when he sees a woman walking in and go "sucker..." I have had a few unreliable estimates and am fed up; just want to find a "hometown" type auto repair shop - oh I"m on the Southside, but will go on the Peninsula if I have to..

we've had pretty good luck with Sears Automotive at Pembroke. There is also a good place on Holland Road

My husband, ex-mechanic in his 20s prior to graduating from college, AND my daughter (14yrs) do my brakes. Call them up! lol
On a serious note, the guy who owns American Pride Automotive in Wburg is an honest man who is also devoted Christian. There is another American Pride Automotive shop down here in Yorktown off of Hwy 17 but not sure if owns both or what the deal is.
My husband trusts and uses the Firestone on Langley for repairs he would prefer not to deal with or no longer has the tools for.

Let me add, that the Firestone on Virginia Beach Blvd at (4834 Virginia Beach Blvd) is not trustworthy. I was down in VA Beach this past summer when my car had a flat tire. I got the car over to Firestone and it was supposed to be a simple tire replacement. The sales person tried to explain that there were various things wrong and they needed to be fixed, one of which was required right then and there for the tire to be placed on the car. My hubby asked to see and the next thing you know they were changing their suggestions and all agreed the tire just needed to be replaced and everything else was ok.
That was in July 2011.

You don't say where on the southside you are, but we use Able Auto Service for our car and truck repairs. It's a family-owned business located at 736 S Military Highway just north of the Indian River intersection. Their phone number is 757-523-0020. When we began using their services, they were sort of a hidden gem. Now, I think word is getting out about them. Their business has increased tremendously. Even though they take walk-ins, if you can call for an appointment, it would be better. This is their WEBSITE.

I could sing their praises day and night, but the most important thing to me is that I can trust what they tell me about my car. I also trust their work.

If you'd like some more info, you can always send me a message here at CD. I'd be glad to tell you what I can.

The single worst ripoff I ever experienced was from a guy who was a "devoted Christian." Apparantly in name only, or possibly he thought God wanted him to be rich.
