I left HR before the light rail was up and running. How is it? Has anyone ridden it? Has it turned out to be worth the time and aggravation that came with getting it up and running? I may visit the area in April to see family before going back to Alaska and may give it a ride just for gits and shiggles.

It's very nice. Unfortunately it doesn't go any place and we're also being royally screwed since it won't be extended through the Midtown Tunnel extension.

So really at this point and for the foreseeable future it's nothing more than a novelty.

Was it supposed to go through the Midtown tunnel?

It should have been. Considering the tunnel expansion has been talked about for years, the rail has been in the works for years and they haven't even started construction on the tunnel (just signed the deal a few weeks ago,) there's no reason why it shouldn't be.

I think it was supposed to go over the water and not under , LRT tunnels are very expensive and most cities can not afford them.

They're already putting in a new tube for the tunnel in, though. Makes more sense to add it in now than wait and then have to construct a bridge (which won't happen from Norfolk to Portsmouth) or another tunnel for the train.

It's really nice. I use it a lot when I'm in town. Feels safe (even late at night), clean, and seems to be on time for the most part. The last time I used it was after the Illumination Parade, and it awesome to see everyone using it.

It was a blast. Park at Newtown and try taking it all the way down. Appreciative of the police presence, all felt safe. Looks like bicycles are allowed if you feel like biking at your destination.

Would be nice! Hopefully the other 6 cities realize how important good mass transit is and won't leave Norfolk to go rogue again.
