My husband and I have been entertaining the thought of buying a home when we get to Norfolk (he is getting stationed there), and have been looking at a few properties. I have heard a lot about Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Newport News, but not so much about Suffolk. Can anyone tell me about this area at all? Two of the homes we are looking at are in the Kings Fork school district... one is the Crittenden subdivision and the other is Kingsboro. Are these nice?

Same questions for two properties we are looking at in Chesapeake... Sunrise Hills sub/Indian River school district, and South Norfolk sub/Oscar Smith school district.

One more question.. There is one home that is about an hour away from Naval Station Norfolk, right outside of Suffolk. I am in love with the home, well from what I can see online at least, but my husband is 100% against it because of the distance. I understand his reasoning, but I wanted to see if anyone has any experience with living further away from the base and traveling this far of a distance. Is it really bad? Are you ever able to avoid the rush hour traffic? Any advice...... TIA.

I'd recommend Chesapeake or Virginia Beach. There are some nice parts of Suffolk, Portsmouth, and Newport News, but you need to take a tunnel to get Norfolk and traffic is a hellish experience during rush hour.

Indian River is much better than South Norfolk.

My other two cents is to strongly look at renting rather than buying. It's possible that the military presence here gets cut back significantly, which would cause property values to drop. There hasn't been a huge drop during the recession, so I'd argue that there is still a real estate bubble.

Suffolk, specifically North Suffolk, is (besides Williamsburg) the best Hampton Roads has to offer. You're centrally located to Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton and Newport News (VA Beach is the only thing that is a pain to get to) because you're at the crossroads of 164 (which leads to the Midtown Tunnel) and 664 (which leads to 64.)

The Riverfront at Harbor View is the best neighborhood to be in. Home prices start around $500K and go up from there. Although I'm not up on the schools, Kings Fork I believe is okay. It was newly built about 7 years ago (both the middle school and high school) There is also the private school option of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy which is right up the road from Kings Fork.

I would not live an hour away from the base... not only will you be in the middle of nowhere but an hour drive would be hell.
