I used to live close to the Hampton/York Co. line til 2 yrs ago. Northern VA is way too expensive for college agers. I may transfer to ODU in two years. Any ideas on where to live cheap but somewhat safe? I'll go as far north as hampton/NN and south as Va beach. Number one choice is hampton. any suggestions?

I'd personally rather live on the side of the tunnel where I spend the most time... meaning, if you want to go to ODU, live in Norfolk. Ghent isn't cheap, but it would be my top choice if I were still a college student. Commuting across the bridge-tunnel every day is not for me... if you used to live in Hampton, you know how bad it can be, and at weird, unpredictable hours, oftentimes.

Another choice is Chesapeake... parts of Great Bridge in Chesapeake are 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk (going down I-464). Mostly houses, not apartments though, but if you got a roommate, costs wouldn't be too great, I would think.

i never really commuted from hampton to norfolk on 64. i always used 664. i don't mind the commute, i have a 1 1/2 commute to my job now in clogged northern va. so that wont be a factor.

Okey dokey then. Somebody else will have to chime in to pitch a place in Hampton to live -- I'm not as familiar with it there.
