moving to hampton roads area, looking for place to live,
priorities:
#1 school
#2 traffic to work
#3 neighborhood
#4 easy for renting out if we leave in a few years

It bothers me the most if I couldn't find a good school for my son. so after research, it seems the following areas have the best public schools: chesapeake (great bridge or hickory) or VB (great neck, thoroughgood)..and also larchmont has a 10 score elementary school..
please correct me if I missed any good areas.

work is at portsmouth, so to avoid tunnel traffic, and to get the best school , where should i live,

if all the public school is not as good as private , then which one is the best private school in this area?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd say the best private schools in the area are Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News and Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg. If you'll be working in Portsmouth, though, I would live on that side of the tunnel and stick with southside schools. From what I've heard, the Virginia Beach public schools are supposed to be very good and would save you an excessively long commute and a lot of money. I haven't heard as much about Chesapeake and Larchmont schools, but if you're seeing high scores in your research, I'm sure they're good as well.

Good luck!

I'd say live in Suffolk, and send your child to Nasemond-Suffolk Academy. I would not live anywhere where I had to drive through a tunnel!!! Western branch schools in Chesapeake might work for you too. I wouldn't put too much stock into great schools though.

Nasemond-Suffolk Academy cost average 12,000 to 15,000 dollars per student per year

In my opinion, Norfolk Academy is the best private school in the area, followed closely by Norfolk Collegiate, Nansemond Suffolk and Hampton Roads Academy. My kids attend HRA and we are very pleased.

If you do go the public route, Grassfield HS in Chesapeake is awesome!

none of the public schools are excellent. Some are good. Anyone saying otherwise isn't paying attention to stats.

thanks for all the inputs. I used to live in boston area. and I know the public schools are good in the greater boston area. just want to make sure the VA beach/ chesapeake public schools are as good as boston, then I will consider to put my kids in public school. .. private school tuition is not easy for us, but if I have to, I will try my best to put them in private schools. for me, education is the most important thing.

I don't know about public schools in boston, but any major college readiness stats for public schools in Hampton Roads are average. Even the best isn't a place I would put my kids.

Go to some of the high school college counselors and ask where the kids end up going, combine that sad tale with college readiness stats.
