Happy Thanksgiving! I am hoping to get some help from all of you. My husband recently accepted a job in Hampton Roads with an anticipated start date in the beginning of next year. We currently live in a suburb of Cleveland, OH. We honestly love living here, but the job opportunity was too good to pass up. We are looking for a condo or town home to rent and we aren't sure what areas to look at. We are both 26 and have been married a little over a year. No kids, just a 1 year old goldendoodle, so we need a place that is pet friendly. We are looking for an area that has fun restaurants and bars and is close to the simple things in life like grocery and drug stores, gyms, etc. We are moving here knowing no one, so we would like to find an area where we can meet people and make friends, maybe an area with people in their 20's and 30's. My husband is going to be an area sales manager, so he is going to be traveling all over. There is not a specific place he will be going to work everyday. Any help you can give will be appreciated!

I second this. You didn't mention price, so I'll mention Town Center in va beach - there are condos there (can be pricey) but also a very nice area to live if you are into that sort of thing.

Is he working on the southside or the peninsula or both? If both, he may be in trouble. On the peninsula, your best bet may be a good neighborhood in Newport News or Hampton since schools are no concern. On the Southside, try Ghent in Norfolk or Chesapeake.

Don't rule out renting a SFH. An older ranch style house with a yard for rent will probably cost less to rent than an apt. There are LOTS of rentals right now because houses aren't selling fast, so they are renting them out until the market changes.

Now that I have gathered more information about where my husband's home office is, we are for sure looking at either Virginia Beach or Chesapeake. Any recommendations for areas to look at? We are looking at renting, whether it be a condo, townhome or perhaps even a SFH. Thanks for your help!

There are SFH in the Ocean Lakes area. You can go to the association website and inquire.

Default Try getting close to the beach!

I moved here in February and am at the beach quite a bit. If I didn't have children and schools to worry about, I would live by the beach. My dog loves it!

I'm not sure about particular neighborhoods though. I do also like Ghent. However, if a backyard for your dog is important you may run into trouble there. Just a thought!

We live in Ocean Lakes and it is dog friendly, close to shopping, etc, but you need a car. There is nothing in the neighborhoods themselves, like a bar or club or anything. You have Red Mill and Strawbridge area for shopping, dining and movies. You can drive to Sand Bridge in 20 minutes or to the VB beach area in 10. Dogs are welcome on the beach from Labor Day until Memorial Day. It is just my husband and myself and we have a 2 bedroom 1600 ft townhouse on a lake and it is good for us. I have an office in the second bedroom and we can still easily accommodate guests that want to come to the beach. If you want trendy, then you must go to Ghent.
