I was watching old videos featuring US cities from the 40's, 50's, 60's, etc. I was wondering if anyone has seen any videos featuring the areas of Norfolk, Newport News, or Portsmouth before/during the urban renewal period. The videos could feature something as small as a drive through the neighborhoods. I have seen numerous photos from the urban renewal era, but never any videos.

I am not aware personally of any videos. I have heard the Norfolk Public Library has a lot of vintage items. Perhaps they may have something. The new Slover Library just opened downtown on Plume street in Norfolk.

I once saw a video slide show of downtown Newport News from the 1950's-60's if I can find the link I will post it. At one point it was the largest downtown in Virgina then it died rapidly starting around 1988. I lived at 4808 Huntington 1991-1996, had a picture on my library wall from 1981 showing 32nd and Washington packed with weekday shoppers.

I would be interested in seeing that if you could find it. Thank you! I did not realize that Newport News ever had the largest downtown in Virginia. I'm sure the downtown area was very urban during that time period. Honestly, the downtown/eastend area of Newport News reminds me of some of the industrial Midwest cities.

Downtown Newport News seems very small. I have trouble believing that it was ever the largest in Virginia. Did it shrink somehow?

Pyro, I'm thinking the same thing. Just assumed Richmond has always possessed VA's largest downtown (?)

That said, when Bad News annexed Warwick in the late '50s, it ended up with over 100,000 people.. In the late '50s that probably put Bad News in the top 3 most populous cities of Virginia (maybe behind Richmond & Norfolk). Is it possible Newport News' downtown reflected that back then.. and was larger than Norfolk's & Richmond's. Are we talking square footage.. or amount of people living in their respective downtown areas (?) One poster stated that Bad News' downtown was declining rapidly in the late 80s, but my personal recollections,.. Richmond's downtown had been much larger than NN by then,.. physical size, number of businesses, population (& crackheads).

Where can I find information about my uncle, Captain Percy Tyree, who took a damaged "Landing Ship Dock" to the Great Lakes via water and all by himself in the late 40's or early 50's? He operated his own tug boats in the 40's but I think.
