I am possibly moving next month for a job at Langley AFB. I am trying to find an apartment and need good schools. What is a good area to look for apartments and where should I stay away from? Also needing good schools for my 10 year old son.

Currently I am looking at some places in York County.

Also, looking for youth travel hockey programs.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re youth hockey, check out this website:
Peninsula Prowl Youth Hockey Association

You do not want to travel through a bridge/tunnel twice a day so staying on the peninsula is good. York County schools are better than Hampton and Newport News.

Good luck.

I used to live in The Courts at Yorkshire Downs and had an okay experience. I'd also look at Belmont at York just up Hampton Hwy. You will definitely want to live in York County over Hampton if you need public schools.

How hard is it to get to Richmond? Google map states about a hour n half to get there. Just wondering how accurate that is. I see they have a good youth travel hockey too. I would like to check into a couple different places to see what may be the best fit next season.

There are two rinks in the Richmond area: one in Chesterfield & one in Short Pump. Google is right --- both are about an hour and one-half drive assuming no backups.

The nicest rink the area IMO is Chilled Ponds in Chesapeake. This is where the Norfolk Admirals train. It has two sheets of ice and is closer, but you have to contend with one of the tunnels to get there. It is usually about a 40 minute drive, again assuming no backups. Have you checked out their travel team program?

No, I haven't looked at the rink in Norfolk yet. I will look into that one. Good thing is I will have time to check the rinks out before tryouts so can figure out which one will be a good fit for him. Thanks again for your information and help TN lily.

Are you moving from an area where there are lots of opportunity for kids playing hockey? Virginia is not that kind of place. I believe that hockey is more popular in Northern Va. There use to be a rink in Fredericksburg, but that one closed. And there use to be a "short" sheet of ice in Richmond, but I think that one is closed too. My son plays in beer leagues in Richmond & VA.

My daughter started out playing ice hockey on a house league in Charlottesville. She stayed in the house league as she grew older over not wanting to get injured in checking. When we moved here, she switched to figure skating which is why I have been to the other rinks. On the southside there is a a rink in Virginia Beach and then Chilled Ponds.

There was a very talented young lady in Charlottesville. In order to play on a girls team, one of her parents, twice a week drove to Baltimore for her to play on a girls team.

Good luck. Check out Chilled Ponds for sure.

I currently live in Columbus, GA and drive 2 hours one way for my son to play for a rink in Kennesaw, GA (just north of Atlanta). They have a great hockey program there and he really enjoys it so trying to keep him going. His biggest issue with moving is leaving that program. Gotta love kids way of looking at things .

He will stay in GA and finish school and the hockey season. At least this will allow me a chance to visit some of these programs to see what they have prior to tryouts in the spring.

My biggest challenge now is picking what apartment to move to with the schools being the biggest factor. I can't afford private so will be putting him in public schools. He has such a great school here and is in an advanced program as well. Trying to be sure he stays in a great school and would love if a gifted program is available too.

Thank you Dissenter for info on place to look at. I did look into the Belmont at York and called on it. Leasing office was super nice and even answered some questions I had about the area that was not related to the apartment complex. Very nice and helpful. They are for sure currently at the top of my list. Thanks again.
