Good way of explaining it. People read too much into other opinions of Hampton Roads without experiencing it for themselves.

I grew up there, and you are correct. It is very conservative, which is not a bad thing!

I still believe the Southside (where I grew up) Va. Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake is very conservative and a nice place.

If that is your perception of/concern about Conservatism, VA Beach may not be for you.

VB has a large military (family) presence, and is culturally influenced (to some extent) by Pat Robertson. If you're a childless hipster, check Ghent (Norfolk). Norfolk is welcoming arrogant gentrification with open arms. But if you have children, Norfolk school's aren't ideal. Peace
If you live in Ghent, you don’t rely on the public school system. You will most likely will go to Norfolk Collegiate, Norfolk Academy or Cape Henry Collegiate (maybe even Nansemond Suffolk Academy).

At one point, maybe 7 or 8 years ago, there was a survey that ranked VB #2 behind San Diego. I forget the metrics, but I wouldn't put too much stock into any of those lists.

I do notice that Virginia Beach residents tend to be more vocally against major projects in the city (the arena, light rail expanding from Norfolk, Something in the Water). On one hand, I get it; Virginia Beach is really more of a large suburb than a city.

On the other hand, to be the largest city in the Commonwealth, the residents act like a small town of 50K with the NIMBYism at times, and it seems like the loudest voices are really in the minority. In population, VB is larger than cities like Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland, so it's baffling to see how they pooh-pooh every little thing proposed.

Given the city's roots being formed from Princess Anne County, I honestly think Virginia Beach should revert to a county and divide up into about a half-dozen smaller towns.

Sick of those Elaine Lauria commercials. She is such a fake fraud. A Pelosi hack. Granted Scott Taylor was always a Paul Ryan lackey. I'm sure Virginia Beach can produce a better Republican nominee than him in the future. But lets see how he does since Ryan is gone now. Elaine needs to check out of the people's House now.

Virginia Beach went blue during the last gubernatorial election, 2017, over a moderate republican 52% to 47%.

That margin was expanded in 2018 when Kaine won over a right wing republican campaigning with Confederate flags 57% to 41%.

Welcome to the forum..
You're just restating what I already posted.. my opinion, Norfolk public schools are not an ideal option for gentrifiers.. But I'm not sure if u can prove your claim that kids from Ghent 'most likely' go to private schools. Anecdotally I've known Ghent kids who went to Blair, Maury etc instead of private schools.. I won't claim to know the actual %, one way or the other tho..

This isn't inconsistent with VB politics (or proof of a new development ?), where they are represented (at times) by Democrats on a state & more local level(s).. but VB is consistently voting for Republican presidential candidates.. 2000, 04, 08, 12, 16 (I just looked at VB's city website, voting results )
I remember thinking it was odd that VB was represented by a popular Democrat congressman in Owen Pickett for a long time (& Mayor Oberndorf, who was technically not party affiliated, but not Conservative).. but Virginia Democrats used to be more Conservative than the national mean average.
I think Bill Clinton won VB tho, because of the 3 way race in 92.. some one may be able to confirm or refute this with a link tho..
