I've recently had to fly into this airport a few times over the last 6 months, and I often been left wondering how this is considered an international airport. I can't seem to find any information on any direct flights originating from this airport headed to international destination. Can someone explain to me how this airport gets an International designation despite only serving domestic destinations?

The "international" designation has more to do with the facility than with the services presently offered. An airport is "international" if it has the Customs, quarantine, and other infrastructure in place to handle an international flight if/when needed. That doesn't mean there's regularly-scheduled commercial service to/from locations outside the US.

Maaaaaaaany international airports in the US do not have regular international service.

ORF does have international charter flights arrive and utilize CBP services. If you follow their social media accounts you will see them from time to time.

If you feel that way you should see Dayton International Airport.
