I'm planning to move to the VA Beach/Chesapeake area and want to build a custom house. Any ideas on lot prices there, preferably in a subdivision? Also, any builders to stay away from? Considering Mitchell homes as a builder...

If you're looking for a lot that size you might want to consider looking in North Carolina. It's MUCH, MUCH cheaper!! A lot that size in this area will start in the six digits. Most lot sizes in the populated areas are only about a third of an acer. If you don't mind a bit of a drive, there's the Suffolk area, it's building up out there and so is North Carolina. You'll have about a half hour - fortyfive minute drive into Chesapeake for either of those. There is too much construction around here to even keep up with it all. Lots of Condos and (what they call) "City Living" homes going up in Virginia Beach. The pembroke area is up and coming, they're trying to give it more of a "city" feel with cafes, the mall, and new condos. Alot of well established neighborhoods in Va. Beach. Incase you've never been here, the city of Va. Beach and Ches. aren't really "cities" in the way you'd think of New York city for example. Everything is more spawled out and a car is almost a must.
