So Mom and I arrived late last night and I am in at awe at the beauty of the area. I am staying at Greensprings Resort and everything is so green! Trees, trees, and trees! (No, I haven't been east coast much less VA before.) I ran down the street to Ukrop for some food and was shocked at the grocery store. Wow, talk about upscale. At least that is what it appeared. What keeps throwing me off though is everything is so spread out. Last night, I thought we were leaving town I don't know how many times because of the trees and then "pop" another shopping center or something.
Today, its new teacher orientation stuff and then we get to explore the area. We have to leave tomorrow...aaawww....but the whole family will be back the second week of August!
P.S. Everyone is so friendly here!
Thanks all!

We have had good weather lately. Plenty of rain to keep things green and pretty. When you come back in a few weeks it may be much more humid and a little drier!

Welcome!

One of the things I like best about this area is that you have the beach, but then just go inland a few miles and it is green and lush. Best of both worlds

Absolutely! I find Virginia as a whole, very versatile. What more can you ask for?

When I went to Vegas for Defcon, I came back and it was raining. After being in vegas, I guess there was a lack of green since it's a desert. When I got back to Norfolk my eyes were about to explode. It was like being in the jungle. The rain helped as well.

I haven't seen the beach yet, too much driving to do in Williamsburg. I was hopeful to get out to the beach and down to Hampton but haven't. I doubt I will have time. I did get to Warhill and DJMontague and the Ymca. My biggest problem is trying to find child care for my boys. Warhill has me starting at 7am and the before school programs at the schools open at 7am. Can't be in two places at once. However, the Y looks good and not far from Warhill. I am open to suggestions though.
Is the entire area as pretty as Williamsburg? So well kept and beautiful?

I think Williamsburg is probably the most aesthetically pleasing part of HR, the rest of the cities are not nearly as nice overall. Don't get me wrong, there are pretty areas of each city, but Williamsburg seems to have a small town charm about it. Drive through cities like Newport News, Norfolk, or Virginia Beach and you will see that it either has an industrialized feel or a very bland, suburbian, cookie cutter feel.

I would love to live in Williamsburg myself, but my wife would need to commute into Chesapeake and I wouldn't want to do that to her . I think you will really enjoy it there.

Don't worry about not seeing the beach. Most of the people that live here NEVER or rarely go to the beach. Last time I went 'to the beach' was like 4 years ago and we actually went to the Outer Banks for the day to meet my daughter.

I prefer to go to the beach and wander the boardwalk or shops in the spring or fall when most of the tourists are gone.

Welcome to the east coast? Most places on this side are like this even big cities. Glad you enjoy it.
