My boyfriend and I are looking to relocate away from the cold New England weather in Massachusetts and are a little unsure of where to go. Here are the factors we would like to consider, any insight would help!

We have no children, so school areas are unimportant to us.
We would like to be within a half hour of the ocean, but not in a tourist driven location.
We want mild winters, not too cold and snowy/icy
I don't want excessively hot and humid summers
Beautiful scenery and things to do is a plus
Are there going to be bugs the size of my head?

Thank you all!

I'm not gonna lie to you.. Hampton Roads is a tourisst trap so that pretty much cancels us out.. It's very humid in the summer. There are mild winters here, beautiful scenery, plenty of things to do, and no huge bugs, but you say not a touist locaton, that's all I see here in the summer.. Virginia would be my choice out of Va, Nc, or Sc though. I love it here, but I like the tourists

Beautiful scenery, things to do, mild winters, not too touristy, no excessive hot/humid summers(coastal areas of VA,NC,SC), look at Roanoke and the mountainous areas of VA, NC. If you want to be closer to the ocean look at the Wilmington NC area but there you'll get the heat & humidity. Oh well it looks like there will be no perfect spot in the states you have selected.

Hampton Roads is a great place to live if you don't mind tourists.. And you can avoid them if you go to local beaches like sandbridge or chicks beach.

My daughter and future son-in-law live in New Hampshire and in their 20's. They both have admitted when visiting us, that they would love to live here if they chose to relocate. I do not care for cold winters and snow either, you outgrow them I guess. Tourists seem to be migrating everywhere these days. If you don't want to live on the boardwalk (good choice) or down the road from the boardwalk (another good choice), and love the water, I would also recommend Chicks Beach and Sandbridge.

Hot humid summers almost rules out the entire southeast !
Yes we are touristy, but most beach tourists head directly to the oceanfront at Va Beach. The majority of VA Beach is just a normal suburban town.

The Williamsburg area is also touristy, but that is over 30 min to the beach.

The postive note on the area, is that this is a fully functioning group of cities where you can live AND go to the beach. There are not that many cities in the SE that can claim that until you get to Florida. Most of cities on the ocean cater almost completely to the tourists. Yes, every city has plumbers and hospitals, but this area is a complete job market. You will get varying opinions of the job availability in the area, but times are hard everywhere.

We can get cold in the winter, but there is almost no snow. The winter is pretty short but our climate also allows for 4 very distinct seasons.

Hot and Humid in the summer is anywhere near a body of water as well. Upper midwest is terrible with humidity along the lakes.

4 seasons = 8 months of summer...1 month of spring...1 month of fall...2 months of winter
