Hey there,
My husband is getting stationed at Ft Eustis and we are looking for an apt. I've been reading the forums and from what I grasp Newport News isn't the greatest place to live unless in certain areas. We're moving from Stuttgart Germany (One of the top 5 or maybe the 6th safest cities in the country). I suppose wherever you go there will be some kind of crime or issue but with 2 years of no problems in Germany, moving back to the states is a transition.
My husband doesn't want to have to drive more than 15 mins to get to work so it leaves us limited on our radius. Since my search started a week ago this is the only apt complex that sticks out area and amenity wise. Can anyone say if Kings Ridge Apts @ 401 Jester Ct Newport News, VA 23608 is decent? This apt complex seems nice and according to a crime watch map provided by someone thru these forums, it doesn't have as much crime going on as some other areas. Any advice?

My best advice is to view the area on Google Earth. My husband and I moved to the Hampton Roads area not too long ago and GoogleEarth helped us narrow our options down. Another piece of advice is don't settle on an apartment until you are actually here and have had the chance to physically view the area. Prior to moving into an apartment in Hampton, we were looking at Chelsea at Lee Hall, which is close to Ft. Eustis. There were a couple of reasons we decided against it: 1. the vacant apartment that we would have been renting was right next to the train tracks, LOL, and luckily a train came through during our visit...so we were able to hear how loud it would be. 2. my husband is stationed at Langley, so the distance was further than we wanted to drive. If you want to give me more specifics as to what you are looking for, I think I can help with where to avoid...again, I haven't been here long, but we looked at SEVERAL complexes before deciding. Just hit me with a private message if you'd like. Best Wishes!

That's a relatively new development out that way. From what I recall of that part of the city, crime really wasn't an issue at all.

Default PCSing to FEVA

When you get here you will get 10-14 days in a hotel. Turnover is very quick here on apts and from the sounds of it you really want to see it yourself to feel safe. There are tons of communities around FEVA, you don't have to live in NN. Relax I have lived here on and off (3 seperate assignments) for 20 years and never had a crime issue. Have a safe trip here with your family.

Thanks for the responses! Apparently Kings Ridge Apts is based off of your income... and we make too much (not THAT much jeez!) so my search continues... I spoke to someone who told me to look at Townes of Jones Run... looks nice and doesn't have income restrictions. I am Also looking going to look at St. Andrews Apts... hopefully something turns up. Just a little tid-bit about me and my safety worries. I looked at the crime watch map and found my hometown (utica, NY) on there thinking crime would be the same as NN... surprisingly, not as much crime as I thought at all and definitely not as much as NN! If anyone has any info on those two Apt complexes please reply! Thanks =D

Have you considered renting a house/townhouse/condo instead? You might be surprised at what you can find for about the same amount. If you want to DM me your criteria (max rent amt, min # bedrooms, min sqft, etc) I'd be happy to send you some listings.

Listen to BrianLMA, there are no good apartments in Newport News and I would rent anyting in Denbigh. Tell you husband to commute. We looked into Kings Ridge years ago when we got married and decided against it. Shortly after it was built, there were already shootings.

I'm not sure how djenk4 interpreted my post above as saying there are no good apartments in Newport News. I only suggested that you may want to consider renting a house/townhouse/condo as well.

My interpretation was she would be better off renting a house/townhouse/condo. I think she would have better luck. Living here for 32 years now, my opinion is that there are no good apartments in NN, especially conveniently close to Ft. Eustis.

Perhaps you might look into the York County or Williamsburg area? All of the cities here tend to run together so it's not like living in another city puts you really far away. In some cases it could put you closer to your husbands job then being in another part of Newport News! In another year or so my husband is going to be moved to working on Fort Eustis and he'll be commuting from Lower York County, which should be about a 20 min. or so commute.
