Oops. I forgot to mention that while the cats' blood work was overnighted to Kansas on May 13th, the effective date is the day Kansas receives the blookwork: May 14th. The clock starts ticking that day (the 120-day waiting period), even though one will not find out until 3 to 4 weeks after Kansas receives the goods.
Your cost may be a little less than my total (to date). Cat 2 did not have a chip and had ear mites, so we also treated Cat 1 as a precautionary measure. Cat 1 did not require the medication because he did not have ear mites; we just checked and gave him the treatment anyway. Whew! That medicine was expensive!
To save even further, I would recommend getting the flea/tick treatment elsewhere. It costs $7 at a local non-profit for the flea and tick treatment. The vet's cost is $17.90! Are you kidding me?
You will need to get the flea and tick treatment at the LAST vet clinic (an actual exam) a minimum of 14 days before the pets arrive in Hawaii, so it will appear on the Health Certificate. Why pay more if you have to?
Do what you've been doing for your pets until this last vet visit.
Know that
the Hawaii DoA states that Revolution is UNACCEPTABLE so DO NOT get this treatment -- for the last one anyway. I've scheduled the cats' last visit 7 days before they leave, in case of delays with their flights.
You do not have to mail the pet's health certificate to Hawaii. The airlines will affix it to the pet carrier upon tendering them at the airport cargo facility.
Be sure to specify to your vet that your pet is MOVING TO HAWAII! The non-profit scoffed when I told them I need an "actual signed rabies certificate" for Cat 2, indicating she had her Rabies vaccination in 8/2009. They just printed a computer generated certificate and gave me that. I didn't realize until later I need an actual signed copy. I had to go back to get the vet's signature under the computer-generated one. I'm hoping this is sufficient. My other certificates are computer printouts with the vets signature underneath.
We adopted Cat 2 (the beast -- this is really what we call her!) in 6/2009 and got all her shots done 2 months after she landed in our back yard after being abandoned. She was already spayed, but I got all her vaccinations in August, which cost about $45.
Many clinics don't know and
just assume they don't know. Tell them the laws in Hawaii are very strict. Better yet, just go to a vet that has experience preparing cats to be shipped to Hawaii. This is why I chose the vet that I did. This is imperative!
