Japanese, korean, fillipino, chinese?
Who is where?
Thanks
Are there any Cambodian or Laotians?
I'm interested in Asian nationalities and cultures and where they reside.
I appreciate the answers

Hi, amber --
By far, your largest Asian etnic group is going to be Japanese, but you pretty much named the "big four" already. "Fifth" on that list will most likely be Vietnamese. Thais also have a bit of a presence, while I'm not certain about Laotian. I've encountered one Cambodian (a former co-worker), but I couldn't tell you how much of a mixture they represent.

And of course you have a very healthy mix of (besides Kanaka Maoli) "Pac-Islanders": predominently Samoan, but also large populations of Micronesian.

Keeps things pretty interesting and infused with what Boy George referred to as "heavy culture."

Wow that's so cool...ithink I'm ready for hawaii. I love asian cultures and to have them all intermixed on the islands is so fabulous. Is there a "chinatown"?

Our "Chinatown" I've always believed should be more appropriately called, "Asia-Town," because while Chinese shops & markets markets predominate, they are followed very closely behind by Filipino, along with a wide spattering of Vietnamese shops & eateries (an extremely popular spot is "Pho To Chau" Vietnamese noodle restaurant -- people literally begin lining up outside their entrance door around 8:00 a.m., and the line generally stays long until they run out of product). What may come as somewhat of a shock, however, is that despite our heavy Asian population in the Islands, our own "Chinatown" is really quite small and (dare I say it) unimpressive.

It's just the Hawaii equivalent of whites everywhere else. Nobody gets excited about how many different kinds of white people there are in Ohio

That's because most of them have completely lost sense of their original culture. No one can tell the difference between the guy with Polish grandparents, or the one with French/German origins...as both of them will go and on only about the Ohio State Buckeyes, generally with almost NO knowledge whatsoever of their background or differences in background.

If you go a bit more eastward though, you'll see places like Boston & New York, where people still retain their Irish-American or Italian-American, etc. roots a bit more...and actually see differences in attitudes, everything....which will be much more interesting.

Going back to the original post...I share the OP's enthusiasm for the rich culture of various ethnicities in Hawaii..and how they often still retain that...even with many as mixed as well, etc.

I just wish that more on the mainland did. I have Irish, French, German roots. The Irish side has retained it...my French and German side have not - they seem basically oblivious/indifferent about it to me, as if it didn't exist at all - which is a loss, in my opinion.
