With our wonderfully clear skies and less light pollution, we here in Hawaiii should have a pretty nice show. It's been going on for most of August with it's peak being this Friday August 13th.

"If you live under very dark skies or can travel beyond the sky glow of urban America, you can expect to see up to 75 meteors an hour, astronomers suggest. If you're hardy enough to be on a mountaintop, the number could reach 108 meteors an hour. The best viewing locations will be in the Northern Hemisphere, with Southern Hemisphere sky-watchers limited to perhaps 30 or 40 events an hour at the shower's peak."

A few friends went up to Mauna Kea to try to see the meteor shower, but I think their timing was off. Probably too early.

I didn't try to get up early enough to see anything this morning, but the "moon-set" last night over the Kohala coast was simply stunning. I drove from Waimea down to about 1500ft above sea level after sunset. The white crescent moon was hovering well above the horizon when I left. As I drove home, it was darkening to a deep yellow. I parked my car and climbed up a small hillside and watched as the moon turned blood red before disappearing beyond the horizon.

Pretty amazing - and credit probably goes to.....vog.

The meteor showers in Hawaii are stunning, especially when you drive away from the cities to a remote area and lie on the hood of your car. I have many great memories of gazing at the sky in Hawaii
