It depends on exactly WHEN more than anything. I just checked Hertz' rate for the cheapest economy car, in Kona. Booking it for next week, for three weeks, and paying in advance the quote was $185 a week. But we're in the usual after-New-Year's dip in tourism. Over the holidays the quote was more than double that. In a few more weeks the rates will probably be back up as winter vacations increase.

And the water is wet, and the sky is big! Come on over, everyone, it's simply fantastic here!

Except, actually, I really feel like a nap right now, but all those frickin' songbirds outside my window won't stop!

Oh, reminds me of a funny true story from the Four Seasons Hululalai, where my very well-to-do brother has vacationed regularly forever. In the last 10 years the coqui frog infestation has become quite serious on the Big Island. It's a pest species accidentally introduced from Costa Rica. Tiny little frogs... they can sit on a quarter... that have an insistent call that is louder than a lawn mower, once habituated to an area they are virtually impossible to eradicate. And in chorus, from dusk to dawn, they can collectively out roar a go-cart race. It's become such a big deal here that one of the documents that must be filed in a residential sale transaction now is a signed disclaimer that the buyer is aware of the issue and accepts responsibility for whatever noise they make. And that was put in place because of all the lawsuits that ensued when buyers had only seen a property during the day, and had no idea that the night time was so much different.

So with that background... a guest called down to the front desk after dinner and said "We thought the frog soundtrack was quite charming while we were eating dinner, but now that we're going to bed, we'd really like you to turn it down."

I had a big belly laugh at that one.

As I do more research it seems the Big Island may be the "winner". There seems a larger diversity of places, weather and locations there. The Kona area seems especially intriguing.

Of course 2 or 3 day trips to the other islands are always available.
