I am thinking about taking my girlfriend to Hawaii and would like to know any family friendly places. Are there any family owned resorts or housing for vacationers? Any suggestions on where to eat? hang out? etc. We might bring our three year old daugther.
Hawaii is the State and it's also one of the islands. There are 6 seperate islands that tourist go to that make up Hawaii. What island are you visiting? No good to give you places on Hawaii (Big Island) when your stayingon Oahu (Honolulu - Wikiiki Beach). What do you mean by family own resorts because many of the best family friendly resorts are national chains. As for hangout and eat, what are you looking for as far as these? Do you want local grinds or Hawaii Polynesian flavors? Also activity are island based so if you want to see the volcanos and lava but staying on Kaui or maui, you need to fly to another island. If your on the Big island and want to vist Pearl Harbor, you have a flight to another island.
Details are needed.
We're taking our kids to the island of Oahu in Hawai'i for the first time next week and we found that book on Amazon a few weeks ago. It is filled with tons of info and things to do for kids, good places to eat and inexpensive ideas, etc. It also has really useful info in it like safety tips for the beaches and sun tips.
That book is set up in a really easy-to-use organized way and has lots of cool info in it that we haven't seen in other travel guides or Hawaii blogs or websites. Even shows you where Elvis had his Hawaii vacation home and where President Obama went to school and lived at, and where his family likes to swim and eat when they visit. Also movie/film/tv locations and stuff like that.
Both books also have good info on the best swimming beaches in summer or winter, and what kind of sand to expect on which beaches, and which beaches have lifeguards or do not have lifeguards.
I can speak of the Big Island, Puna District, and in the Keaau area. There are furnished vacation houses in the area starting as low as $50 a night. Many are at $75-$85 a night. Check these out:
Some are on an acre of land. Flat sandy beaches are kind of scarce in the area, but there are hot ponds (naturally heated swimming areas), and nice snorkling places nearby. Hilo is the closest airport, and a very laid back one too. Hilo is maybe a 20 minute drive (except in peak traffic hours). Just north of Hilo is the beautiful Botanical Gardens. There is a nice (and free) zoo near Keauu. Kona is a couple of hours away. There is certainly rain in the area. we were there last week and there was some rain on two days. The rest of the time was totally gorgeus!! Volcano National Park, Lava Tree State Park, the Makuu Market on Sundays wher e you can meet and see lots on nice people and buy great fruits and veggies, eat a nice meal and hear some live music. The U of hawaii at Hilo has a nice astronomy exhibit. Etc, Etc.
Hope you have a great time wherever you decide.
Jon
I've been to Maui about 7-8 times since 1980.
