When we first moved to Kauai getting used to the mosquitos was the worst and took my youngest daughter 3 months before she stopped showing signs of being eaten alive. I am crossing my fingers after being away for 8 months that when we get back we are still immune and don't have to go through that again.

How does one become immune to mosquito bites? I never get bitten, but my husband is a magnetic for them!

It takes 3-6 months of repeated and continued biting before your body seems to be immune to some level. By immune,it doesn't mean they quit biting. It means your body/skin doesn't react much to the bite.
They will always irritate me - mentally - but the bites no longer itch or swell up and the redness lasts less than a couple hours, if that.

They've been pretty bad here on Kauai this wet season, so it will depend on where you live and when you return.
