When we were planning our trip to BI, we knew we had to fly in to Maui first and we thought we'd spend a day there to do a couple key things, etc.
By the time we landed, we were so pumped and done with traveling that we expedited our flight to the BI and skipped Maui altogether as far as sight-seeing goes, and there still wasn't nearly enough time.
Point being, and don't take my previous post as a crabby one...but there's just SO much to do and see...you can't possibly fit it in, so you have to set some parameters for yourself based on your interests and go from there.
So, while we were staying with friends and not having to live like tourists for a week and a half...we rented a car and started driving with some hot spots pointed out to us. We found there was still too little time to enjoy it all. But remember to slow down a bit while you're there, and enjoy it for what it is too. Observe the "Kapu" postings as well, especially when going on unguided excursions.
Anp,
All the island have great hikes. Need to be cautious though if it rains, for the gullies and some trails can fill up with water fast. I would check out the many available books on hiking in Hawaii, which gives all the clues on where to go and meet up with a trail head and stay on a specific trail.
Stay safe and happy!
Earlier I never thought that there is much to explore in Hawaii other than exotic beaches and beautiful landscapes. But this thread has certainly put light on many things.
There really is. We were fortunate enough to be staying with friends, hence the rush to get there instead of staying on Maui for a night...so we could chill, relax and just try and absorb it all. Impossible. I'm ruined for life in a very good way.
There's "nasty stuff" in any fresh water. There's nasty stuff in Sea Water! If you don't swallow it or have cuts/open wounds it's fine. I think it's fair to say Hawai'i has excellent quality fresh water streams. Staff is extremly prominent in HI's seawater, leptospirosis in fresh, but if you take care of yourself you'll be fine.
