Hi! I'm new to the island & my husband is working most of the time so I'm trying to find us a place but it's difficult alone- especially since I just moved here last month. We are looking for 2-3 Bed room 2 bathrooms, MUST be dog friendly, & close to the Kaneohe Military Base. Our budget is 1000 (negotiable). If you have any suggestions we'd really appreciate any help! Thanks,

Jehle & Josh Swanson

not to be nosy, but why is budget only a 1000.00 isnt his housing allowance much more than that? 20 years ago mine was about 1500.00. my son in the air force gets 1400.00 and he is single. I hope you can find something but for the money you are budgeting I can almost assure you it wont be 3 bdrms, 2 baths, and dog friendly. What about on post housing?

First of all welcome to Hawaii and thank you for your Husbands service. Sorry to burst your bubble but a 2-3 bedroom, 2 bath, with a dog in Kaneohe/Kailua for $1000 a month is not going to happen. Your looking at 2-3 times that amount. Rental homes in Kahaluu and Kaaawa tend to be more dog friendly. It's a little further out from MCBH but may also be more affordable too. Please check Craig's List........

I agree, $1000 usually is only enough for a small studio or a room in shared house, especially when it's close to military base it gets expensive because landlords know what soldiers get for BAH.

I thought the military helped with housing.

Even as an E1, your BAH is $2016 a month. You really are not going to find anything that is pet friendly with that much space for less than around $1600 a month. Hawaii is not one of those places where you are going to bank a whole lot of money from BAH. You can have pets in base housing (breed restricted, of course, and no more than 2 animals).

Default Aloha

Hello, thank you for the valuable advice, as delayed as this may be. There has been speculation due to my political and spiritual activism as to whether or not I was actually married to a Marine... We married on Kailua beach on June 19, 2011. As for trying to bank on BAH, we were dealing with some health and family issues at the time- I feel no need to defend us on that subject any further. I was a bit naïve regarding cost of living, I'll give you that Yes the military helps with housing but there was a wait list for on base housing, so in the meantime I had to seek off base housing. Again, thank you for the information- Namaste! -Jehle

Wouldn't a marriage license take care of any spiritual or political activism questions?
