ok we have return flights booked and have 10 days in Oahu...... I haven't booked hotels yet and am thinking about getting a flight to Maui for a few days... is that a good idea - or is there a another island we should think about ??
We are city people and this will be our 'relax holiday' but after 1 day on the beach we are usually itching to do / see something !!
We love good food and wine. long walks (3 miles is a stroll - 10 miles a good bit of exercise ) and photography are high on our list of things to do.
Not really into museums / galleries unless they are unique to the area. Museum of hawaii' history would be something we would visit...... generic museum of modern art.... not so. Casinos aren't really our thing either.
We both drive and have good hotel loyalty status so don't normally have problems getting rooms. This will probably be our only visit to Hawaii so any suggestions of 'must see / do' would be greatly appreciated !!

byodo-In village looks interesting...as does Hana......

Big Island. Walk the trails in the Volcano park. Bring lots of water and don't touch the rock piles.

Casinos no problem – none here. Easy to spend 10 days on Oahu, but also easy to spend 4-6 and fly to Maui for the rest. Oahu = our ONLY city. (Honolulu/Waikiki area.) World-class shopping, etc. The rest of the island is less developed and ready for exploration.

Maui = great restaurants/food, beautiful beaches, European-quality resorts and golf in a remote (sometimes rural) Pacific island setting. Inactive volcano @ 10,000 feet, great drives, amazing views. Humpback whales from November to April.

Kaua'i = big rivers, more camping/hiking focused, nice resorts, great beaches. More time and effort to "explore" than Maui, but gorgeous and rewarding. "Grand Canyon of the Pacific," "wettest place on earth," beautiful drives, hikes, and paddle tours.

Big Island (aka Hawai'i) = live volcano and lava flows, great resorts with amazing golf and beaches, lava fields, snow on mountains in winter.

Lana'i and Moloka'i = even more remote. Two Four Seasons resorts on (privately owned) Lana'i and Moloka'i offers truly local hotel and exploration options.

All depends upon how you like to spend your time, what you like to do, and how adventurous you are. Every island has a unique personality. Every island is enchanting. All are friendly in their own way.

Tell us more about what you want to do and we'll make recommendations?

E komo mai [Welcome]

If you like to go on long walks and hikes the best choice for you would be Kauai. Dont be scared of 'the wettest place on earth". I have lived in Switzerland for many years and trust me, it rains not even remotely as much as you think here. That super wet point is on top of a mountain here on Kauai which is unaccessible. I live at the south shore and it's quite dry here.
There are nice hotels in the area. The hyatt is beautiful, maybe the nicest resort in hyatt's portfolio. Then there is the KoaKea hotel which is actually under Swiss management (Mr. Steuri, a hotel school alumni from Lausanne). Kauai is a outdoor paradise and much less crowded than big island, maui or oahu.

Some visitors like to make volcanic rock piles. Just say no.

Rock piles tell stories we don't want to hear

Maui is great... you mention interest in the road to Hana. That'll take you a couple of days to do it right, but is well worth it. For long hikes, you might consider Kauai as well. Big Island needs 10 days all for itself... just getting around takes to long. Come back sometime, and spend your whole visit there!

So on Oahu, you may want to visit the Bishop museum. You may also be interested in Pearl Harbor & the Arizona memorial. There are lots of hikes all over the island, of varying difficulty. You can find some descriptions here: Na Ala Hele - Hawaii Trail System: Oahu Trails

You might want to pick up the "Hikers Guide to Oahu" or some other book.

On both Oahu and other islands, time at the beach needn't be just "sitting on the beach." There's snorkeling, surfing, stand up paddling, kiteboarding, outrigger canoes... any number of activities for active folks to enjoy that give a whole new meaning to a day at the beach.

On Oahu I always recommend people visit the Iolani Palace. For me, it is a "must see" for anyone visiting Oahu. You can do a guided tour or you can tour at your own pace with a recorded headset. I just feel it is the most important single thing to see in Oahu.

Beyond that, you can tour the Moana Surfrider Hotel (I think it's free). They give history tours of the hotel each day, not sure of the schedule.

I love the night show at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Without a doubt worth the trip up there. I'd suggest buying the guided tour with Luau and the night show. Yeah, it's a little spendy but I've never forgotten it and like I said, the night show is really great.

If you are adventurous, I've done the shark tours out of North Shore and LOVED IT. I could have stayed in the cage for hours watching the sharks.

Anyway, that's a couple ideas. But if I could recommend only one, I'd say should should not miss the Iolani Palace.

The Bishop Museum is great for Hawaii history. Plenty to do on Oahu for 10 days. Gotta remember to plan to do nothing too.

Cold? Depends on what your threshold of cold is...if 68 is cold, yeah, it gets chilly at night. Shorts and a light jacket will treat you just fine.
